Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a lentivirus that can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a condition in humans in which the immune system begins to fail, leading to life-threatening infections. Algae plays an important role with regards to dietary modulation of the immune system to stimulating activity of various immune cell types such as the phagocytic activity of macrophages, or the tumoricidal activity of natural killer cells strengthen the immune system to decrease the risk of opportunistic infections.
