The commercial mass production of photosynthetic micro organisms including micro algae has historically been undertaken in open raceway ponds. However, such cultivation has got certain drawbacks like low productivity and microbes are exposed to contamination. Therefore a closed system of cultivation has been developed, in which these photosynthetic micro organisms can efficiently utilize light energy to produce highest yield of biomass or byproducts with considerably less risk of contamination. Such closed mode of cultivation system is known as a Photo Bioreactor System.

Photo Bioreactor systems are available in several designs like tubular, helical, well shaped, flat plate and pyramid shaped.
