Cosmetics are substances used to enhance or protect the appearance or odor of the human body. Cosmetics include skin-care creams, lotions, powders, perfumes, lipsticks and shampoos. The cosmetics made earlier consisted of synthetic chemicals with artificial colors and flavors, which were not very suitable to the human body. Subsequently research was carried out to develop cosmetics using natural base products like Aloe Vera, Henna etc. The research however indicates, that even within the natural base products, algae is the most suited for this purpose because of its richest combination of pigments like chlorophyll, carotenoids, phycocyanin, phycoerythrin, proteins, minerals, amino acids, polysaccharides, polyunsaturated fatty acids and enzymes act as antioxidant, makes algal biomass best candidate for the exploitation in Bio Cosmetics industry.
